Wireless Makeover: Hope or Hype?

06/03/2005 12:00 PM

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the technology behind wireless communications in homes and businesses is on the verge of a makeover that promises to solve persistent problems such as spotty coverage and inconsistent speeds. There are just a few small problems. The 802.11 specifications aren't official and 802.11n doesn't even exist.

802.11g

06/03/2005 1:25 PM

802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g are all official standards of the IEEE. 802.11n is a new standard, but they movie fairly quick on updating the Ethernet standards. The funny thing is that TCP/IP is one of the WORSE methods for sending data, it's why it took so long for VOIP to emerge and still doesn't work all that well. The thing that makes up for it is the fact that it was designed to be horrible so it's redundancy helps to cover up for how slow and sloppy it handles traffic management.
