Sulphur Gas and Ceramic Blankets

04/09/2009 7:18 AM

Dear All ,

We have a WHB(Waste Heat boiler) in our sulphur recovery unit and externally it is insulated by ceramic fibre blanket of 25 mm . We find that due to leakage of some S0x... the Insulation material (Ceramic fibre blanket) found disintegrated and become powder thereby losing all its properties . I want to know that whether the ceramic fibre blanket can react with SOx and if it is so what is the permanent solution to resolve the problem. The Surface temperature over the Insulation is around 80- 100 deg c . I welocme ur suggestions.

Regards

Earnest.

Self-evidently...

<...what is the permanent solution to resolve the problem....>

Stop the leak.

SOx emission has to be immediately stopped whether of not it reacts with the ceramic insulation.

Before we do any thing this is important to locate the source and stop the leak. It is bad for you and local living around.

I come from India and have seen this type of problem because of cheap solution we sought and does not take care of root cause , in this case it is leak of SOx gas.

Now the reasons

1. Based on R value of insulation you are using the glass will have different chemistry but all are based on sodium - borosilicate glass based chemsitry.

2. SOx is mixture of SO2 and SO3 gases which is leaking

3. SO3 converts to H2SO4 in presence of moisture in atmospher

4. This locally creates very low pH and dissolves the fiber

5. Fiber crumbles to small powder

6. As long as there is leak of SOx and humidity in air this will happen and if any one comes and give solution he is lying

7. ONLY SOLUTION YOU HAVE IS TO LOCATE LEAK SOURCE AND FIX IT BEFORE IT COME IN CONTACT WITH HUMIDITY IN AIR AND CONVERT TO H2SO4

8 DURING RAIN H2SO4 WILL WASH AND GO TO POUND AND WELL

9 WATER WILL BE ACIDIC

10 NOW HUMAN AND COW MATA WILL DIE BECAUSE OF WRONG ATTITUTDE OF OURS NOT GOING TO ROOT CAUSE

IF YOU DO NOT RAISE THIS ISSUE TO YOUR UPPER MANAGEMENT YOU WILL BE KILLING HUMAN AND GODS ALONG WITH OTHER ANIMALS
