Wire Holder

04/11/2009 7:52 AM

Is there such a device that will hold .010" wire?

I want to be able to insert the wire similar to the method used when wiring some modern electrical outlets. The wire goes in, but won't come out unless you push on a little tab. I need to string a piece of music wire between two points and draw it taught and hold it there in a short amount of time. I'm not playing music, just cutting clay.

Why don't you use an old fashioned drum and ratchet ?

What is a drum and ratchet? Do you have a pic? I only have 2 inches of space.

Thanks.

2 inch too lee- but you can think it as the wire tightening kew in guitar or violin.

Wrap the wire over a drum (or the key) and the position of this can be locked by a ratchet mechanism, release the ratchet and the wire can be unspooled.

Giving just the concept - we have this is much larger scales. But the string instruments do have this in confined spaces.

If there is a CIA surplus store nearby they might carry these in stock. "Garotte"

How about a hacksaw blade holder. Just take out the hacksaw blade, then wrap the wire around the anchor end, twist properly. Then loosen the wing nut at the other end, tie the wire around the other end, tighten said wing nut until proper tension. (do not over tighten you'll break the wire), now your ready to play. :)

"Pin vises" at the bottom of this page would hold the wire. I guess you would need two of them to make the special tool for your application.

Push-on wire connectors are made that are used in place of wirenuts. Often called Waygo's for the company that makes them. Available at most home improvement stores. You can look at them on the internet.

Rather like the clamp that holds the blade into a piercing saw, for instance?
