How Do You Use Members List for PMs?

04/11/2009 1:01 PM

I wanted to send some Private Messages by going to the Members List, and finding certain CR4s there, and sending from there notes.

Typically I have to find a post, then click on the poster in order to get to them with a PM. In my hotmail I have an alphabetical list of contacts whereby I can click on A, or B, and people with a name starting or ending come up, and I then click to send them an email.

Is there something I have missed? To make myself clear here what I am wondering is if there is a mechanism or protocol where by if I want to send Del, or Milo, or Moose a message, I can punch in their Avatar, and get a PM message screen, without looking for Threads or Blogs where they have posted?

Go to your mailbox and there's a button that says something like 'create new mail message'. Just enter the names in the 'To' field*. (eg - enter "Del, Milo, Moose"). Store names you might want in a text file somewhere ?

You can't post to people when you're not on CR4, unless they chose to give you an external mail address.

There's a list of all CR4 members, to right of screen, but it's a bit long.

Clicking on someones avatar takes you their profile. Upper right hand side it says something like "Send <whoever> a message". Click, and the form pops up.

* press "options" and you can send me a "Bcc" (Blank carbon copy), then I can be nosy without the other recipients knowing. Just joking - I can't see any good purpose for BCC.

So then there is no way to use the Members list of any way that I have missed, and going to mail message is the way only to do the sort of thing I described.

Thanks.

Exactly! That is to protect the privacy of list membes. If you could collect all the members names ( all 259 pages worth) the list would be a gold mine to spammers. What's wrong with using the provided method. I mean, how often do you need to tell someone something in private that you don't want to post to the forum?

If its off topic or totally unrelated get familiar enough with them to use private email addresses. Or continue to use PM via CR4.

Yes, as far as I know.

As Elnav points out, it's an anti-spam thing. The size of the 'To' box makes it unwieldy if you chat with more than a handful of people on the same message (though I don't know what the limit is ). As with forum posts, you can 'report' inapropriate PM's.

If you want to find a member's profile quickly, use the "Search all of CR4" box on the right. Type in their name, and hit Enter or the Go button. I found elnav that way.

First, this page came up. At the top of the list is an item that just says elnav, and has this image to the left:

That indicates the item is a member profile. Clicking on elnav's name brought up his profile.

If I wanted to send him a private message, I would have clicked on this link:

Send elnav a message

One search, then two clicks and you're ready to PM.
