ok, www.pcpitstop.com and run full tests. This website will be able to tell you everything about your hardware and software as well as anything that needs to be fixed.

Good Luck.

Brian,

BelarcAdvisor.com is a free utility that is excellent; it will tell you everything, including software key codes, microsoft update status, etc. This is a very useful program, that I use when verifying systems that I repair for customers.

Ya if any one knows your machines IP address and if you follow some sort of prosidere with him them he can able to see you data as well your configuration..........

hackers can do that without your permission. they get necessary data from some other way and can access your data.

Most information can be found at my computer properties that will list the basic information. the rest can be found by checking the devices in the control panel

Hi Brianinsyracuse,

your PC comes with its own tool that will give you the system information. in my case, for example, an HP Pavilion dv6000, with WinVISTA Home Premium, I can click on 'Start', 'All Programs', select 'HP' and 'HP System Information'.

I can also go to Win Explorer, right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'. the results, however, will not be as detailed as what is provided in my 'HP System Information.'

I can then know exactly what is in my system without taking it apart, as you said.

IMHO, there is no need for other tools for that purpose. when it comes to security, I am of the paranoid type, and would rather work with what manufacturer has already provided for me.

HTH!

For Windows XP, go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information.

Re: whats in my computer

Langyaw,

If you are that paranoid, then, is it safe to say that you ONLY use the factory installed software programming on your computer ??? After all, if the factory installed it, then you can trust it right ???

There are many excellent software companies globally that have programs that are way more efficient than Microsoft; such as Auslogics Defrag versus Windows Defender. Auslogics is way faster and is even used by the US Military. And I am sure that "they" check things out pretty good.

And I do not know of ANY Engineering programming that comes designed and installed by Microsoft................please do not limit yourself; I understand being wary of insecurities in computers, but if we do not venture out, we will falter in our mission as engineers.

And yes, I agree that Microsoft has some good programming and features, however, the knowledge is not in the company, the knowledge comes from the engineer. Suppose that engineer leaves one company and takes employment with another....does his knowledge decrease or become less valid simply because he or she do not work for the "big" company anymore ???

Yes, by all means venture carefully, but to allow fear to hold you captive is far worse than the not to venture at all. After all, is not this what engineers do........seek to improve and progress........I apologize for philosophizing this somewhat, but we cannot let fear rule our daily lives..........the sky is not falling.

Re: whats in my computer

hi oldgolfer,

I believe you misread my post. my machines are HP laptops. I use HP System Information tool. it came with the machine, not with the MS OS.

I do not like MS products. I use Firefox as browser and Thunderbird as mailer. but my paranoia ends where the machines' stability begins. as much as I would like to uninstall MS apps such as Windows Defender, for example, I'd rather not, because I'm not sure what else will be its effects, and the loss of time I'll be incurring fixing things. this is exactly the reason why MS is repeatedly beleaguered with lawsuits from Europe.

if I had my way, I'd install Linux in all the offices' machines. but I'd be exerting my personal choice over the corporate's interest, and lose valuable time doing so.

as a result, I install only security apps that have good reviews and ratings. AFAIK, no government establishment has ever built an un-hackable fortress, so I'd rather go with products that have had good reviews and ratings and try them out myself.

the bottom line, I guess is that we take care of our own machines, making sure they keep working well and stay secure to the best of our knowledge. as long as it stays that way, I'm happy.

cheers!

Query:

"can anyone tell me if there is a way to tell all the components (ie) motherboard, ram type, in my computer with out taking it apart"

Suggestion:

Google Aida32 and download it. Preferably from the actual site.

From the last time i've utilised it, it was a freeware package. I'm sure it still is.

Was very usefull and the file size is small compared to the other ones available.

Hope this helps. :)

Regards

In my view SIW.exe is the best for information on SW & HW in your system.

Majorgeeks ink

http://www.majorgeeks.com/SIW_System_Info_d4387.html

Publishers link with all the information

Author: Gabriel Topala <http://www.gtopala.net/> Date: 2009-03-17 Size: 1.49 MB License: Freeware Requires: Win All Downloaded: 141688 Times when I downloaded in 04/04/2009

More over it is a "Stand-Alone", is just run SIW.exe & all the info is open

---------

Actually the best has gone shareware

AIDA32 I have the last free file.

It not only gives detailed info but also suggests solution to certain HW problems like RAM etc etc.

Provides all the links to your SW & HW for updating

File with me is of cource outdated as latest data is not added.

Any how it was the best even better than SIW above had it been free.

You can use any free diagnostic toolkit, like this one:

http://www.freshdevices.com/freshdiag.html

It will scan your system and report what it found.

If you are using Microsoft Windows as your OS, you may use "msinfo32" command.

Type it from Run menu (start menu -->Run).

Or you can use some freeware program like CPU-Z(http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php), or PCI32(http://members.datafast.net.au/dft0802)
