Inlet Nozzles and Eccentricity

04/13/2009 11:52 PM

Why the Main Inlet nozzle in most of the KODs is kept at some eccentricity?

singlaatul: What is a KOD??? Not listed in Acronms and Synonms. Avoid the use of abbreviations to save a lot of aggravation of the CR4 denizens.

Turbines such as Tesla and Pelton water wheels have the air, or water enter the case tangentially to get the maximum transfer of energy from the fluid to the wheel.

Much simpler to spell it out than to be leave to the imagination!

Essentially a means to separate a fluid from a gas/vapor. With the mixture entering the drum tangentially the high speed of the mixture will throw the liquid to the wall and the vapor/gas will move toward the center.

Much like a centrifuge!

Eccentricity? I don't know what do you mean with eccentricity.

Whatever, in KOD's we used as a designers for a flare systems to install the main inlet of flare header nozzle into the top of the shell or in the upper portion of the dished head in horizontal vessels to avoid interference or interruption of inlet flare gases with the accumulated condensates located at the bottom of vessel. Also I recommend to install a van inlet device to avoid swirling and allow an enough resident time for collecting the condensates.

Since there many applications for KOD's they vary as to the positioning of the nozzle depending on the the two materials to be separated. Anything from a cyclone dust collector to your flare gas unit. All will vary in design to suit the particular application.

The proper term for this type of nozzle is,

"Tangential Nozzle"

This link (http://www.westank.com/tangential.php) shows a small vessel with both the inlet and outlet with "Tangential Nozzles".

The tangential configuration of an inlet nozzle in a knock out drum increases the separation of liquids from the gas stream.
