CR4 and Google Chrome

04/18/2009 6:26 AM

One of our home PC's is set up to default to Google Chrome as the browser. I am using it right now. My question is why, when using this browser, do I get a different format. For example I do not get the bar above the message screen giving the spell checker, formatting tools etc. Below the message screen I get the following; Formatting Tags: Linking: Formatting: bold italic Images:

Any ideas how to "fix" this?

Ha, interesting..I was wondering if it's any good...I hate it when I get..'download this new thing' messages as I tend to assume they will be slower, worse, crash and generally be a pain in the arse.

I have the same problem but with Linux. Evidently something in the formatting of the edit window eliminates the good stuff for anything but Windows.

Maybe not. I use Firefox, and I have the bar across the top of the message box.

I think I might know what's going on, but I have to check it first.... I'll report what I find.

Edit: Didn't find what I thought I would. Some discussion sites allow you to specify the type of message editor to use, but it appears CR4 doesn't.

A similar thing occurs on Macs: Safari has no toolbar, but Firefox does, so I use Firefox for CR4 (and as a result, for most everything else.

It appears that whoever wrote the code for CR4 didn't know/follow all the rules. It's been a couple of years since one of the CR4 editors told me they couldn't get it to work with Safari.

IE recognises several HTML tags which were invented for and by MS. Several of them are way cool. Solution? Use IE until the rest of the backward folks out there catch up.

If you want a really fast completely free browser which works on windows with CR4: try enigma:-

http://www.suttondesigns.com/

It's a sort of cut down version of IE (I think you need to have IE installed or it won't work).

I've used it for years on several computers and never had any problems.

(One really useful feature is zooming in and out Ctrl J and Ctrl K.)

I don't know if it works on Vista.

Hi all, Thanks for your responses. I thought I was just too old to work it out, but apparently it is not my stupidity alone at fault, which makes me feel better.

No two people in my household can agree on which browser to use, so I will just live with what is after all a pretty minor problem.

I know the feeling...Mrs Cat complains that our system is slow because it's old and I have too many icons on the dektop <splarf>.
I explain that it's more likely to be server capacity problems due to loads of pesky school kids going online at the same time (you can hear the server groan when the schools empty out for the day!).... but she doesn't believe me!.
She'll make me tidy and polish my desktop if I'm a baaaad kitty.

Icons on the desktop don't slow it down (I think) I was reading about it somewhere that is a common misconception: http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1161781270/
