Mobile phone towers

04/18/2009 9:08 AM

There is a proposal to install a mobile phone signal tower on our residential building. I would like to know about the safety aspects on the subjetc. I have attached terrace to my flat and my understanding is the area in the radius of about 8 metres is unsafe, there is rdiation hazard. Is there any authentic study carried out or regulatory controls on the erection of these towers? I tried on the internet, but could not get anything like any scientific study or regulations to safeguard against the hazards.

Thanks

Nope, in addition you will find magnitude differences between what different countrys think is safe.

It is a band of non-ionizing radiation (like your microwave), so we are talking about burn hazards vice genetic damage per industrial standards. And the power emitted goes down as the square of the distance, so hazards decrease very quickly with separation.

Those are the recognized hazards.

There any number of websites across the spectrum from respectable to nutjobs who want other hazards and standards recognized. Finding your way through those will be a challenge.

And the same can be said about just about any "expert" internet site. Just remember that the word "expert" is derived from two other words: "Ex" or "has been" and "spurt" or "drip under pressure".

I got this from an expert site......

In Canada the safety guidelines are outlined in "Safety Code 6". These regulations are based on scientific studies, so should be a reasonable guideline to exposure hazards.

A few years ago, the Federal Communications Commission added RF exposure safety rules to its ham radio regulations, after having such rules in place for commercial applications for years. I imagine the agency in your country that issues ham radio licenses also has jurisdiction over cell phone towers.

If you can't locate that agency online, try searching for FCC RF safety rules for guidelines.

I don't know if you own your flat or how your planning laws work but, whatever the real danger of this tower is, the perceived danger is enough to affect the value of your property.

Thanks everybody. Though I could not get any data about safe distance from the tower, the proposal was scrapped on the health hazard issue.I thank you all for providing your inputs.
