why is the direction of rotation of table fan and ceiling fan different?

The fans that I have can be ran in either direction with the flip of a switch. ?

The desired air movement is the reason. Design on a table fan is to draw air over the motor to cool it, direction is hard wired in. The ceiling fan has a switch to change direction giving the user the option on how they would like to circulate the air in the room. The fan is also placed where most people can't reach to stick their fingers in the works so the motor is designed more open for cooling and at a slower speed.

I guess, the person who design the table fan is a right-handed and the guy who design the ceiling fan is a left-handed. That why both are different.
