DC Supply Failure

04/22/2009 7:26 AM

what may be the consequences of dc supply failure(whch is meant for protection supply) in a panel. The power to that panel is fed from an upstream panel. Will it affect the upstream panel. If so how?

the consequence is that it may cause the other panel to fail also or contrast issues due to the power drain(if it is due a short). please give more information.

if there is just no supply to the protection circuit then i do not what kind of protection circuit you are talking about, an over current protection circuit? or an TC circuit?

oops i left something out

if there is just no supply to the protection circuit then it will have no effect as long as the Panel is working properly

If that panel is designed properly, all the protections are fail safe. This means that they will be activated at the loss of supply. You will get all the alarms monitored.

Since the power comes from the upstream panel, if it looses it, it means that either the connection is cut or the upstream panel's supply has also failed. It could also be a short circuit which will at least blow a fuse in the upstream panel if it was properly designed.

As others have mentioned, if the upstream power distribution panel is properly designed, no permanent damage should occur with a downstream power supply failure. The only exception to this that comes to my mind is that the circuit protection device in the up stream panel might need replacement. To state the obvious though, all other device powered by the same branch as the failed supply, depending on the failure, will loose power from the upstream panel. An improperly designed power distribution panel though, the damage that can occur is anyone's guess.
