Believe it or not there are engineering companies out there that do nothing else but work on ways to save energy on steel mills. Most people believe that since a mill uses an extreme amount of energy there is no way they can go "green" (a political term).

If you have a medium section continuous roll mill it will use 200 MVA of power, running at full capacity. If you can reduce the consumption of the power by 3%, that would be 6 MVA. If they can do that they can sell their steel at less per ton than their competition or sell there steel at a higher profit level.

My point being that the evil steel manufacturer is motivated by bottom line rather than a political correct word speak, but he is motivated to save energy. That actually makes more sense than trying to tell the public to use CFL's (compact fluorescent lamps) which will save the utilities less than $.01 per month per lamp.

The fact that the steel mill can now call it "green" and use it as a pr stunt is ok with me. Also they will be able to use that info if in fact governments begin to give them tax breaks or god help us, begin to issue carbon emissions taxes. Which in turn trickles right back down to the consumer.

GHOG, I totally agree with you. Additionally, I think the long term damage that is done is that by companies calling themselves green, it encourages the political class to do more damage.

My employer does a lot to save energy (save $ too), but when they self promote themselves as green it drives me crazy because the enviros are then self-justified.

Becoming more energy and operational efficient, that's good.

Having to give in to new ways of taking money from business for a 'theory' that has a lot of holes in it? Priceless
