A YouTube question

04/26/2009 3:20 AM

Why do longish movie clips on YouTube have to be split into segments?

Is it not possible to put an hour long clip on there without splitting it into 6 ten minute clips?

I found a fascinating story on there and tried to listen to it while I was doing something else but because the total time of about one hour had been cut into six clips I had to keep breaking off from what I was doing to go to the next clip.

I guess there's some regulatory reason for doing this imposed by YouTube but it seems shortsighted and doesn't achieve much, if anything at all.

I think it is to prevent piracy of movies, because if there was movies on there, people would simply download them, and are more likely to if it is all one file rather than segments of it. Also, it would take sooo long to upload something thats an hour long

Imagine how long it would take uploading a single massive file?

DVB requires about 1.2GB or so per hour (depending on the quality) (Digital Video Broadcasting)

a typical upload speed is a fraction of the download speed, unless you have a symetrical connection, also all video files are converted to Flash Video format, I'm not sure if those are then larger or smaller in file size.

If the file was a MPG or MPEG, you could just join the pieces together and it then should still work as a single video file.

From YouTube themselves:

It doesn't really explain why, just why some can while most others can't.

It also depends on your account, if you have an director account you can upload large files.

A DVD is only 1.8GB in high quality 700MB is usually enough or even less if you reduce the quality/resolution

Why not download the Ashampoo clipfinder (or the HD version). It will download YouTube clips according to a search you make (also other film web site clips), its free and it works just great, you need to register and its updated from time to time.....

It can be run in either English or German (at least!)

You can then string the bits back together if needed......

Look here for the download. Click on your language flag top right and search for "Clipfinder" (without the hig commas of course!).

Download, install, get sent a registration number and have a great time using it.....

You can search on all the clip web sites simultaneously, saves time.....

That is an unanswered question at this time. If anything is illegal, its putting some material on YouTube in the first place. I feel that should be defined first......if it wa sup to me!

But I was referring to video material without copyright of course, there is plenty of that also on YouTube!!
