What is Thermic Corrosion?

04/27/2009 8:40 AM

Our French customer recently mentioned Thermic Corrosion in a meeting. We all assumed someone else would understand but after the meeting we found that our 60 odd man years of engineering experience did not include Thermic Corrosion. Is it a mistranslation from French or does someone know what it means? A Google search revealed a couple of paints claiming to prevent it, but nothing more.

Can anyone out there educate us?

Thermic is French for thermal.

Thank you for the useful links.

That site is now added to my favourites but in this particular case it looks like this type of corrosion does not apply to our products. The temperatures and gases they refer to are far hotter than our water or oil filled valves.

Hi JayGeeBSE With regard to your thermal corrosion post, could you explain a little bit of background to it. What is the project etc

Thermic is not but corrosion related to thermal activated oxidation of metal. If you open any hand book on metal or to some degree basic explaination is introduction to materials by Wolf explains this well.

Bottom line is

1. At room temperature if there is oxidation of a metal it will be less than undersame condition if one raises temperature to 75C and will still be more if the temperature is 100C and so on.

This is what thermal or Thermic corrosion is . There are math and diffusion equations which will predict this thermic oxidation which is based on rate of oxidation and diffusion of oxygen in within oxide film formed.

Good example is aluminum it forms non pervious alumina barrier and hence people can use this at room temperature but if you take and heat this to 100C on oven for few hours and then cool down you will observe the ductility is decreases and it cracks easily than non heated aluminum foil

Above is because of thermic oxidation
