Warning: Your Adobe Reader May Be at Risk

04/29/2009 9:20 PM

This release is today 29 Apr 09:

Adobe has acknowledged a security vulnerability in the newer readers (8.1.4 & 9.1) which may allow execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the application.

The Linux versions definitely have the bug and other platforms that Adobe provides readers PC and Mac may also be at risk.

For its part, Adobe's acknowledgement was brief. "Adobe is aware of reports of a potential vulnerability in Adobe Reader 9.1 and 8.1.4," said David Lenoe, the company's security program manager, in a security blog entry. "We are currently investigating, and will have an update once we get more information."

Re: PC, Mac and Linux open to Abode Reader vulnerability

I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9 from my laptop recently and started using Foxit Reader for my pdf files. It starts up faster than Adobe and I've had no reason to complain about the other features.

I didn't know about the bug until now. It was just a matter of choice.

regards,

Vulcan

I abandoned Adobe for Foxit Reader some time ago, because of the mark-up capabilities (remember the old days of print, where you could add marginalia or underline passages or highlight them? Always one of my pet peeves, not being able to mark up what I read...). I agree, Foxit is faster and I seem to get fewer "wrong format" errors...
