144.0 - 146.0 MHz is the Amateur Radio VHF band, which is highly structured and controlled. Depending upon antenna design at both the transmitter and the receiver, crossing half of Europe is possible under good conditions within the maximum output power licensed for use in this band.

Permissible transmission methods in this band include

  • carrier-wave morse code
  • upper sideband
  • narrow-audio frequency modulation

145.0-146.0 MHz is restricted to narrow-audio frequency modulation in 25kHz channels.

For simplicity, power, not frequency, will enable you to get a rough estimation of range. Affecting this would be the height of the antenna, the surroundings (are you in a valley or top of a mountain for instance), your battery's state, and, of course, the overall quality of the unit.

regards,

Vulcan
