Who Sells Toy Gearboxes?

05/01/2009 3:53 PM

You know those toys you sometimes get in Happy Meals (I have kids) that you roll backwards for a short distance and when you let them go, they travel a long distance?

Where can I get just the gearboxes that can do this neat trick?

I am also interested in similar gearboxes that have a pull string.

Either way, I have something I want to build that will take advantage of the short pull input with a long haul output.

I seem to only be able to find these on a website in China. I send emails but they are never returned.

Thanks.

If you need them in small quantites, salvage from toys (im sure your kids won't notice) + There may be some branding on the actual pull back motor itself.

Got a nasty feeling you won't get a reply - unless you say you're after 250,000 as a first run, and flash some cash.

Also doubt whether anyone in the western world still makes these things.

Maybe there's a market for someone a bit run-down & scratching for work. Put a decent proposal together & find a small precision engineering company kicking it's heels (designers champing at the bit, but only managing to chew the ends off their pencils, and machinists killing time turning left-hand thread screws to mix in the box as "jokes").

You never know.

You're probably correct about not still making them in the western world, or middle world as it is on my atlas.

My first job as a student was assembling these using a fly press, in Northampton UK.

It quickly taught you how to duck fast as the weight came swinging round.

I Agree with both previous posts.

Your best option (unless running production) is most likely sitting in the bellies of the oh so many discarded toys in the bin at the local goodwill/secondhand store.

How about a Toy Fair? Simply select a suitable toy, buy it, and remove the outer stuff from the mechanism, perhaps?
