ac or dc ? / Halogen bulbs

05/04/2009 4:24 PM

Hope someone here can shed some light ... Wiki article didn't help!

Looking at any number of "bayonet-style" ("DC base") halogen bulbs such as those shown here: whether they are 12, 24, 120, 130 or other voltage ... not a blessed one of the ads (or wiki) makes any reference whatsoever as to whether ac or dc current is "standard-feed"... tho some state clearly that they ARE dimmable (for what that's worth).

Question is: are these things "universal" (ac/dc), and further, what type of control is used for dimming, please...?

Many thanks!

guest; the lamp does not care which it is! in your car head lights it would be DC, in your home it usually be AC, any one of those can be dimmed, on AC use a ac dimmer, on DC use a DC dimmer. perry

Many "Thanks" Mr. Perry

Most curious, now (since wiki didn't help): do you know --- for any given voltage, is there a difference in the lumens output between ac and dc ?

guest;their could be a difference depend on the frequency of the AC voltage, if you had a 120 volt DC source & 120 volt RMS source, the heating effect would be the same, but you would/could or might see a strobe effect from the AC. the mass of the filament could make a difference. perry
