Kindly tell me the use of semiconductor layer in the XLPE power cables

The semi-conductive layer over the conductor (between the conductor and insulation) is commonly called a screen layer and the primary purpose is to limit and smooth the axial and radial voltage gradients and prevent ionization of any voids in that interface.
