SIL Certification for Metering Systems

Hi all, I've to prepare the technical clarification concerning SIL requirement on two kind of custody metering system which stated that the USM for gas custody meter and turbine meter for liquid custody meter. Are they both meters to be complying with SIL? Or the turbine meter only. Understood there were two categories been defined by IE 61508 such "hardware safety integrity and systematic safety integrity". It would be appreciated for someone to assist.

Does SIL stand for Safety Integrity Level?

Yes it is. And should the gas/liquid custody meters system complies with SIL (either using "Ultrasonic Meter (USM) or Turbine"?

hi,

SIL Value will be defined duiring PHA/Hazop analysis, depending upon the frequency/consequence/Proability of the loop.

Having said if SIL Is not defined for this particular loop during HAZOP,no need to go for SIL certified sysytem,

Morever your scheme will be somewat like dis for custody (From inlet-to meter- FCV -motorised actuator -prover sysytem-finally outlet) so here the question of Safety shut off valve doesnt come into the picture /OR Equipment under control doesnt come, so we can safely say SIL certification is not required

Emphasis should be made to have amore accurate reading since its used for custody metering
