How to Size Axial Flux Alternators

05/08/2009 6:46 AM

How do I size Axial Flux Alternators to different size and RPM windmills?and should I use the highest grade rare earth magnets N50 I think or will the N42 or N45 work just as well . Thank you.Brian

i might think the size of the generator might have an impact on that answer..

Glad to see your into the wind. The higher grade rare earth magnets will make produce the most electricty. Also the amount of windings on each coil will give you a different amount of "VOLTAGE". The air gap between the two magnets will give you different ampridge. What type of wind turbine are you thinking of building?VAWT or HAWT.Did you look into useing PV pannels? For a 1000 watt set up you could spend up to $1000.00 dollars. And will only work in the right amount of wind. You can buy used PV pannels for about $500.00 each for a 225 watt pannel. Good Luck.Google DIY wind turbine, you will get alot of stuff to read. Have fun.Ive built 2 VAWT so far.

Thank you for the input ,I am building a HAWT sizes from 3'-8' and also want to set some up for pedal power for kids and myself . I have already been messing around with treadmill motors and they are fun but for the wind mill I want low RPM and more power . I did just get the Homebrew wind power book so I am going to build one of theres and then try to scale down . Where can I get PV panels at that price . Thank you . Brian

interesting to note you have built two vawts. vawt is said to be the least efficient and i, like many in this forum appreciate sharing your experience with others who like to build wind machines.
