it is my confusion,too. I am assembling one relay P443 of AREVA in the 110kV network, i read some materials, they explain that the distance relay receive the current and voltage signal from the measurement instrument, and calculate the total impedance of network to detect the fault and the place that happen the fault, and it will give the trip command. Hence, relay can be protect exactly zone that we want protect, in additional it have other advantage character.

commonly, one distance relay is equiped four zones to protect

i am really interested in the the subject, i hope that we can have more opputunities to change the ideas.
