Alternative Energy Subsidies

05/15/2009 11:37 AM

Alternative energy subsidies make their biggest comeback since Jimmy Carter.

"Voters want action on energy," one congresswoman told The Washington Post. "They don't really care how much it costs." A Democratic president was on the verge of signing "the most important energy legislation in a decade," with tens of billions of dollars dedicated to jump-starting a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels and helping the United States achieve "energy independence." For too long, most analysts agreed, America had put off the hard choices necessary to prevent the next oil shock and wean the country from petrodictators in the Middle East. Now was the time for bold investment and leadership from Washington.

The year was 1979.

Do you think it will be different this time around?

Good post!

I remember the debate - and the taxpayers willingness - to fully, perpetually fund SS and Medicare in the '80s.

But Congress blinked.

I suppose we can all hope so.

I suspect the only difference is in the size of the tax increase they will try to ask for.

The only difference this time around is the money will always go to the people that claims to make the difference than with a overly mass amount of money that will be spent for the good of the people is the vast amount of return that will wind up costing more than the return. To get real result you need serious people to do serious work without government interference.

And if I may no Senators or Congressman involvement these people are nothing but crooks with a legal right to steal form the poor and give to the rich or there special agenda's.

And no this time around will just cost more.

Two differences today:

1- The petrodictators are moving closer, like to Venezuela

2- The price will go up. And Up. and UP. Don't you realize that the only way to salvage a failed government program is to throw more money at it? The government NEVER fails. The only way to kill a government program is to actually find a solution, which won't happen under a government-sponsored program, because all those people would then be unemployed, and who would hire an ex-government worker?

cawarber7 It is not the petro dictators that we should be watching, but the inability of the current administration that is scary, if you look at what is being said in there speeches and comments, then what is not being said in the main stream media but what is happening that not being said in the main stream media, QUESTION the reliability of what is actual happening not the for front of the messages that there trying to shove on us.

As a tax payer Iam applaud at this country's leadership, you can not send yourself out of bad credit practies you just create more debt, economic 101. If a blue collar worker would do what the banking and industry have done to this country he or she would never get out of jail. Its time to start charging the responsible partys that caused all this mess under the war powers act, which is if you endanger the security of the US you can be herald liable.

Yeah, yeah, yeah

A few weeks ago it was "Voters want fuel efficient cars"

Except that it was pickup sales that went up, not Prius.

Back in the '70s people sank a ton of money (a lot of it from taxpayers) into alternative energy. A lot of alternative technology- then and now- is only cost effective if oil prices stay high. If you go heavy into high-cost alternative tech, and energy prices drop (as they have during the current economic crisis) you can lose your shirt.

Of course with the US economy in the toilet, and the end of the Vietnam war cutting military petroleum consumption, the oil crisis of the 70s turned into the oil glut of the 80s, and a lot of alt-energy companies went bust.

The key to alternative energy is figuring out a way to beat both the emissions and the price of oil- with oil at (inflation adjusted) historic lows, not historic highs.

What we need to do is exploit every possible source of energy, while keeping reasonable environmental controls. This will increase the energy supply, drive down prices, and since energy is a cost component in almost every human activity, bring about serious prosperity.

Instead, we will trust the same governments that can't pour water out of a bucket if the instructions are printed on the bottom to fix all our problems. No problem- when everything falls apart, a bunch of us will build our own version of Galt's Gulch.
