Neutral Size for 1/0.6 kV

05/18/2009 3:48 AM

why the cable manufactures produce the neutral size lower then phase conductor like 3x150+70mm2.

thanks for answer, if it possible we will cut the Neutral, of below cross sectional area 3x150+1x70 mm2, and each cable will be installed in each phases (A, B, C) like 3x150mm2, if we use like this is it unbalanced load nonlinear will be appeared in phases or not and the code allowed.

Replying to Forum Thread by hedayatullah_hotak:why the cable manufactures produce the neutral size lower then phase conductor like 3x150+70mm2.

Dear Mr. Hotak,

If the electrical loads in the panelboard are all 3-phase and are balanced, there will be zero current in the neutral conductor. And If the panel has a more 3-phase loads than 1-phase loads, then 1/2 size neutral is fine. However, if all the loads are 1-phase, there is a possibility that only phase A circuit breakers are all closed and all phase B & C circuit breakers are all open. If this is the case, the current in the neutral will be the same as the phase A conductor, and if the neutral conductor is sized 1/2, the entire neutral conductor will be overloaded and it will burn. If this is your case, your neutral should also be 150 mm2 or 4 x 150 mm2.

Regards,
