It is applied to prevent atmospheric moisture combining with materials found at the terminals to form corrosion products that would form a series resistance to current flowing to and from the battery.

To slow corrosion by air and acid of the lead acid battery terminals.

This corrosion could also cause bad connections (high resistance) between the vehicle cable loom and the battery.

In fact, there are some better purpose made products around today, but if you can't find them, Vaseline is a reasonable product to use......

I've been told before now that you shouldn't use ordinary grease for this, but I've been doing it for over 45 years and had no problems yet.

If grease or vaseline is not available, a drop of oil works just as well, though it would need doing more often.

Battery terminal made of Lead materials and we connecting through copper battery lugs, where two defferent metal come in to contact and current passing through them , it creates a heat , and exposer to atmoshere, lead reacts with oxygen , form lead oxide, which you may seen white yelloish power forming around terminals, it make poor contacts for terminals an effect is repeating and fialure of battery charging and battery too

bye
