Earth Fault Currents

05/18/2009 5:20 AM

We have an 11kv/6.6kv Dyn11 transformer with it's secondary, resistance earthed through 4.7ohm Earthing resistor. This 11kv/6.6kv transformer is conected to switchgear panels that then distributes power to four other 6.6kv/0.4kv transformers that are solidly earthed. My question is this:- If there is an earth fault ( phase-ground)on the secondry of the 0.4kv transformer, will the earth fault current from this 6.6kv/0.4kv transformer be able to trip the earth fault protection relay on the 6.6kv transformer.

No it should not. Why... because the ground fault condition present on the downstream transformer is native to that separately derived system and the main transformer will not see any of this ground fault current.
