Mobile Phone Battery Standby Time

05/19/2009 5:40 AM

Dear All,

I have noticed in some country (Europore) my mobile phone (GSM900) battery is lasting for 5 days after full charge with few incoming calls. While i trave to another country (south east asia)which is same network (GSM900) my battery is only lasting 1 day,and when i come back to my place (Europore) my phone battery back to 5 days again.

Any reasons effect the standby time of mobile phone ?

Battery life is affected how "easy" it is for the phone to establish a link with the nearest transceiver. In bad signal areas, the phone will be transmitting much more frequently, as the connection comes & goes and the phone struggles to maintain the link, so the battery drain will be much greater. There may be other factors coming into play in SE Asia, dictating how much the phone needs to turn on its transmitter.

Hi,

I think the reason is rather due to power budget of the Base Station. In every network, the Base station regulates and inform the MS, ie Mobile Station (your handheld device plus your SIM) the power it will use for its uplink transmission.

Another factor is, at idle period the MS does what we call the location update. The interval between this updates also contribute to the running down of your battery.

Lastly, as its usual with Lithium-Iron batteries, environmetal factors affect the efficacy of its performance.

Regards,

Well, I think that's part of what JohnDG was saying. In GSM and CDMA networks, the base station does tell the mobile station how much power to use. This is based on the negotiation between the mobile and the base station where the mobile is telling the base station how well it is receiving the base station signal and the base station monitoring how well it can receive the mobile station signal. The base station is constantly telling the mobile how much power to use in order to overcome interference so the base station can receive the mobile signal. In other words, as JohnDG said, in poor coverage it uses more power. So we are all saying basically the same thing. The only other factor I threw in is that a mobile in a roaming environment will use more power as it is continually looking for its home network.

JohnDG is absolutley correct. How often the phone looks for a connection drastically affects battery life. As he mentions, in a poor covrage area, the phone will "work harder" -- meaning check more often than in a good coverage area. Basically, in a good coverage area, the phone is not looking for a network because it has found its home network. Therefore, the only thing it needs to do is periodically check for incoming traffic. In a poor coverage area, it is almost continually scanning or a network signal.

This is further compounded when you are out of your home area -- as when you go to SE Asia. In this case you are roaming on a partner network. So, even if you have good signal, your phone will still check more often for a signal from your primary provider.

If you have any colleagues that live in SE Asia and have a similar phone, I would expect them to have battery performance in SE Asia similar to what you have in Europore. (Would that by any chance actually be "Europe"?)
