Volume of a Horizontal Vessel

05/19/2009 9:37 PM

Dear all..

I need your input here..

What is the volume of horizontal vessel with 2:1 ellipsoidal head? And also what is the volume of horizontal vessel with hemispherical head?

Actually, i have found the calculation template from this following link, http://www.hatltd.com/hosted/55000702/home.nsf/396e036940cdfb7a802571280074ad47/a8d02af95cc8aae080257309002fa139/$FILE/HAT%20Horiz%20Vessel%20Vol.xls

I just want to know what exactly is the formula..

Really thankful for your response..

it is not a formula but is a series of calculation, I have excel file but I am new member and trying to paste that file but donot know you can send me a mail writing horizontal tank volume i will send you.

Calculate volume of Dish V for ellipsoidal (std ASME) = pi()* Dia(ft)^3/24

Calculate H/D where H is the depth of liquid and D is diameter of tank in inch.

Calculate angle A in rad Acos(1-2(H/D))

Vol of tank cft. = (Lenth(ft)*Dia(ft)^2/4)*(A-sinA*CosA)+4*V*A^2*(1.5-A)

22.22cu.ft

Refer

Chemical Engineers Handbook by Parry. You will get a formula.

This is "cheating" a lot. Instead of going to the link you've supplied, right click on it and save it to your PC.

Open it, and, open a blank worksheet.

Copy cells A1 to R40 from the sheet you've "stolen" to the blank worksheet.

Columns OPQ should now have re-appeared with all the formulas used in the original spread sheet.

I haven't got a clue how to manipulate excel the way the guy who has written the original has done: very impressive.

This came up recently. One of the responders posted this link which is quite helpful to do the calculations. It has quite a flexible set of selection parameters

Re: Volume of a Horizontal Vessel

The volume of an ellipsoid is 4/3 * (pi) *a*b*c where a, b and c are the three different radii.

When the heads are half ellipsoids, their combined volume using the notation of your reference is 4/3*pi*a*(D/2)2 = pi*a*D2/3. The volume of the cylindrical portion is pi*D2/4 * L.

The total volume is pi*D2*(a/3 + L/4)

When the heads are hemispherical, the total volume is pi*D2*(D/6 + L/4)

I have 2 formulae and I have to to search from my old books and try to

furnish the same to this forum and if you send your mail Id. to me I will

mark a copy to you. It is very simple formula but applicable to horizontal

tank with flat end and not dished end. I could see your message to-day only.

My mail Id. is sd610@rediffmail.com.

Hi you can use formula to calculate volume of dish (hemisphere) =

3.14/2 * h2 * D [ 1 - (2*h/3D)]

where h = height of liquid fill

D= diam of vessel

For shell 3.1/4*d2*L
