on 5 May 1910, a train of ten kites launched from Mt Weather rose to an altitude of 7269.7 metres (23,835 feet). In order to accomplish this feat, over 13.6 km (8.5 miles) of wire were deployed.
The best I ever got was about 275 ft of line left out, but that was standing atop a 400 ft high railroad bridge in a state park. The wind coming up a valley like that can give a real boost. Normally I'm lucky to get 60 ft of string out if I'm in a field; anyway, I usually find kite-eating trees.
Once, in El Salvador while drilling a water well, I saw some young boys flying a kite from atop a nearby hill. They had well over 350 ft of line out; thats the best I've seen.

I have had one up far enough that I lost it to an airplane.

I don't think he even saw the kite. He caught the line and cut right thru it.

(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no person may operate a moored balloon or kite --
(1) Less than 500 feet from the base of any cloud;
(2) More than 500 feet above the surface of the earth;
(3) From an area where the ground visibility is less than three miles; or
(4) Within five miles of the boundary of any airport.
(b) Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to the
operation of a balloon or kite below the top of any structure and
within 250 feet of it, if that shielded operation does not obscure any
lighting on the structure.
Wow I broke the law in the outer banks several year ago when I let out all 3000' of line. The wind picked up to about 25mph making reeling the 8' diamond back in very difficult with just a hoop spool.
I stopped at 200 ft. Just because of the time to reroll string. At that distance my 'store bought' tore. Seen the one on cargo ships for fuel economy? Lets!
I don't know. My high flying kite career (at approx age 12) was abruptly ended when the local air force base controllers called the local cops and had me bring one down.
Another time I launched a kite from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina with a hefty log as a drag. Watched it til it disappeared to the east. I sure wonder how far that kite went before the Atlantic swallowed it.
Off direct topic, but I also lost a 12 foot wingspan RC glider to the Atlantic. I caught a very strong thermal that quickly took it out of visual range and never saw it again, even as I tried a death spiral with the controller to get it back.
