Does a DC motor run on AC current? If so what will be the changes in characteristics of motor??

Pause to think for a moment if you please.

If a DC motor can run on AC (and of course it has to be vice versa)

why there are different DC and AC motors?

Please avoid posting just to see your name appearing on screen. There are other ways to do so.

Just study a bit on the principles of motors and drive. Hope that will not be too much of an effort.

Do you always ask these type of questions?

Hi Sb,

What you wrote:

can be applied with a slight change to some of the answers:

"Better avoid answering just to see your name appearing on screen. There are other ways to do so."

NN, I wanted to.

But after opening half a dozen posts like this I love to be sarcastic just for once. Especially, this OPs previous post, check, was how to run a fan in pure vacuum, or something like that.

And at my level, in CR4 with having seen almost 2000 times or else where, where I have to see it too often to be comfortable. and i don't have to resort to seeing my name on screen.

The last line was meant for the previous post of OP.

Please note I was not this sarcastic there.

My reaction was the same as SB's. But I have a Porter Cable Tiger saw that is rated AC/DC. Right up untill I ordered a new switch for it, which came with a sticker for "AC Only". I wonder if it had a diode in it and only ran on half wave? Still the fastest reciprocating saw on the market. Beats a Milwaulkie.

Your drill motor is what is called a "universal motor" and it is a bit different. These were specifically designed for small portable power tools and household appliances where variable speed / high torque was needed but AC was the primary supply source. Technically the motor inside is a DC motor because a DC motor gives you that ability to vary the seed easily (without inverter technology that didn't exist 50 years ago). But there is a rectifier built in to the motor, so you can apply AC to it. So you bring in AC, it goes through the switch as AC, then through the rectifier, then (typically for a drill) through another switch that changes drection, then to the DC motor through brushes.

If you had DC of the same value as the rectified AC, you could apply that as well and it would just go straight through the rectifier, but the problem is in the switch. If the switch is only rated for AC, then you can only apply AC. Switching DC is much more difficult and requires more separation of the contacts, which means a bigger switch. In the old days, the switches did have AC/DC ratings, but as comsumers demanded smaller and lighter tools, mfrs realized that ardley anyone usd DC input on these tools anyway and just went with the AC rated smaller (cheaper) switch.

I wonder if this guy is from electrical background and not even know the different between an AC and a DC motors.

It just like asking "If dogs like to eat fish" or "If Cat like to eat bones"

Some DC motors can and often do run on AC.

A variant of the wound field DC motor is the UNIVERSAL MOTOR. The name derives from the fact that it may use AC or DC supply current, although in practice they are nearly always used with AC supplies. The principle is that in a wound field DC motor the current in both the field and the armature (and hence the resultant magnetic fields) will alternate (reverse polarity) at the same time, and hence the mechanical force generated is always in the same direction. In practice, the motor must be specially designed to cope with the AC (impedance must be taken into account, as must the pulsating force), and the resultant motor is generally less efficient than an equivalent pure DC motor.
