Pipe for Foam Systems

05/27/2009 6:41 AM

Dear friends...

Can anyone help with

what kind of pipe to be used for foam solutions.

can we use carbon steel pipe ERW welded pipe for foam solutions?

I read somewhere that galvanized pipe cannot be used with foam .Is it true.

Can anyone quote some standard mentioning the same.

ur responses awaited..

Sam.

What fluids are the gaseous and liquid parts of the foam?

Once the answer is known it then becomes a simple scour of a corrosion chart to find piping materials that are compatible with both fluids.

  • Hint: the materials-of-construction [MOC] of any container in use at the moment will be compatible, and this is a first candidate MOC for any piping system.

Since foam is not a corrosive mediyum and moreover the forams are not going to there always in thepipeline we noramally uses carbon steel galvanised for foam systems. The other main ipmortant factor is the foam is going to be stored in the container so they noramlly don't accomodate in the pipe for a long time unless & until in case of any fatal fire accidents.

I hope this clears your question.

On the contrary. The AFFF foam solutions that I deal with are corrosive. Steel is only used as a last resort, and then it must be coated with a epoxy coating that is resistant to it, and minimum thickness. PVC, stainless steel, brass, bronze, teflon, and nitrile rubber seem the most common products for THIS foam.

as the other correctly said is necessary to define the "foam" and the service; regarding the galvanized steel if it's a firewater system then it's possible that is not used due resistance of the material in case of fire..
