Squre Threaded Bolt Design

05/27/2009 11:19 AM

What is the procedure to design squre threaded bolts?

Any data available for Axial Load carrying capacity & respective Square thread bolt size?

Do you want the threaded part to be square? Can you provide any more details. A comprehensive answer would run into perhaps a 100 pages.

Have you looked into a Machinery's handbook for ACME thread info? Is that the type of square thread you're asking about?

Are these metric or non metric threads?

Not checked yet. These are metric threads.

thanks for suggestion.

Why are square-threaded bolts required?

Simple

More strength than the standard 60 or 55 deg thread at the pitch

The reverse drive is locked (ie the rotation can give a axial thrust but axial thrust can not make it to rotate)

the ACME or other low angle threads are used in the drive screws, jacks etc where these properties are critical.

Applications is leg mounted tank which need level adjustment.

I thaught square threaded bolts have more strength so want to use the same.

How heavy is the tank?

How level does it have to be?

What are the distances between the legs?

Most of the leveling devices that I've seen have used standard thread. Either coarse or fine series. But maybe your tank weighs too much.

Square threads are stronger but they cost a lot more.

Diffferent tanks with varying weights from 2000 Kg to 10000kg (considering full of water weight). & Mouted on 3 or 4 legs of 50NB to 150NB LEG SIZE.

Is it ok to provide coarse or fine series threads? If yes, how do i design?

Some of the questions you need to find the answers to.

1. Is this a one time use? Only used during initial installation to insure that everything is level.

2. How level does it have to be? With 1mm? 10mm?

3. Do you expect a person to use a hand held tool to adjust the height?

4. Are these tanks being adjusted when they're empty or full? (I would guess when they're empty because it would be easier)

5. Are you using shims under the footpads to support the weight after the tanks are level?

6. Could you use a forklift or jib crane or some other means of raising the tank safely?

7. are you doing the leveling or are other people? If other people, you should talk with them to see how they would do it.

8. Figure out the compressive strength for different thread sizes, if you can use that method.

Keep in mine that you want your method to be safe.
