OLE in the context of software systems (particularly MS Windows systems) refers to Object Linking and Embedding, a process which allows programs to communicate with each other.

The controlglobal site seems to have some information re. OLE in the context of a DCS - but you'll have to register with controlglobal to access their database.

Ravindran: OPC- is the third party Server, "O" stands for OLE ( Object Linked Embbeded) Process Control which can be utilised like Plant Wide Information System. OPC server licensed by Americal company.

There actually is no real 'expansion' of the term OPC anymore. OPC did stand for OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) for Process Control. When the OPC standards were first introduced in the early 90s, OLE was commonly used to refer to Microsoft object technology. The most commonly used OPC standards (OPC DA, HDA and A&E) are actually based on Microsoft COM/DCOM implementations (Distributed) Common Object Model.

Since the release of the first OPC standards, other OPC specifications have been released that do not rely on COM. The most current version, OPC UA (OPC Unified Architecture) is a cross platform, Service based implementation.

In addition, OPC technology is used in many applications outside of process control, such as discrete manufacturing, power and electric, building automation, etc.

For these reasons, the OPC Foundation officially decided several years ago that the letters 'OPC' would no longer be used as an acronym, although it is sometimes used to reflect benefits such as Openness, Productivity and Collaboration.

OPC servers are available for a wide range of devices, including DCS systems (http://www.matrikonopc.com/drivers/dcs.aspx).

For more information on OPC and how it is used you can follow the OPC Exchange Blog. (http://blog.matrikonopc.com/) or visit the OPC Foundation website.
