Hi, I am just experimenting with a project and I like to know if it is Possible to have a Wheel running on a shaft and by Magnetizing the shaft to stop the Wheel. But if I de magnetize to have it running again. Thank You Erwin
You are working exactly like a Permanent magnet (or if you want not permanent then electromagnet) generator, Now as you know the mechanical energy in generator is converted to electrical energy.
This electrical energy can be disspipated (usual eddy current brakes) unless you take steps not to do it on the non rotating part (ie stator say by laminations etc)
The second and easier may be to magnetise the stator and the eddy brake will work on the rotor.
The only problem may be at low speeds , since lower and lower is the speed, the magnetic induction effect (and hence the eddy) will reduce, and so will the braking torque, that is unless you now try to magnetise both.

Google "metadyne brake" - it was used by London Underground as a braking system on the District Line trains. It was so good, that the drivers were prohibited from using it....
