How to Calculate Dynamic Average Speed

06/05/2009 2:26 AM

i need to find dynamic average of speed of a vehicle changing its speed rapidly...

can any one suggest me an algo for this... not the basic average one its too simple

to make it clear at any instant i have the current speed of the vehicle and the mean value...i cannot have a variable for the time or N

Er, how about measuring the time it takes to get from A to B and divide it into the distance between A & B?

thanx for the reply but i need to find the avg using only the current speed and the prev avg value

is der any method other than the

curr avg=prev avg+ curr speed div by 2

Why?

The question is highly artificial and a contradiction in terms.
Dynamic average speed... What exactly does that mean.
And to cap it all you don't want any variables.

"I'll have the steak, followed by icecream, but I don't want any animals killed and I don't want anything cold".

If this is a real application, tell us what it is.
If it's some daft problem invented by you or your tutor, I'd suggest there are many real world problems which are both difficult and useful which you could apply your efforts too.
I appologise if this is harsh, but it sounds bonkers to me.

Oh, and if you want the real solution, simply plot the wheel revolutions vs time, that should be about the right resolution for such nebulous ideas.

I'm terrible at math, but this sounds like an off the wall use of 'Simsons Rule' and might do the trick for you. It is used to find the area under a curve, and may apply to the zero to zero speed of your vehicle. And if I remember it right (please, please correct me on this one) it goes something like this: I use 13 variables, but you may use more as long as it is an odd number. Beginning with the first, X1, then X2, then X4, back to X1, X2, X4, etc., Then divide by the number of variables.

Follow up with a statistical program to verify (ballpark) for practical application.

My Kevlar shorts are on for this one.

It's hard for me to understand why anybody using an algorithm doesn't have the time. What are you using to clock your micro?

At any rate, here is a simple algorithm

Your question is far too vague to answer as you want. Also, you want to ignore one of the basic components of speed, time.

Also, what is "N"? Again, vague. Are you wanting speed or velocity? Unidirectional or some complex 2D/3D path?

Also, oftentimes the best solution is the simple one. If you try to overcomplicate some things, you may crash hard into the planet instead of softly landing...

My god, what's wrong with you people? All nit picking when clearly he's asking about a running average... do you guys really not know what he's on about??

What you need to do is to take previous mean velocity and add the change in velocity/time

For instance

V1 = 10, V2 = 20 avarage = 15 (10+20 /2) but also (10 + (20-10)/2)

So suppose you are at second 35 and you've been sampling every second

your average is 10m/s and you move to 12, your new avarage is going to be

10 + (12-10)/35 = 10.057142857 average speed

Sure its late but in case someone else needs this

Thanks for calling me your god, but you're too kind. I'm more a lesser deity or perhaps..well.

I gave him the bloody answer. He said he didn't have the time. How the heck do you run an average velocity without the time.
