Micro Waste Treatment Plant?

06/08/2005 6:31 PM

I'm wondering whether it would be practical to build a "micro waste treatment plant?"
By this I mean a treatment plant for sewage and household waste water that is sized for a single home. It would have to be self contained, fully automatic, self-monitoring, relatively inexpensive (say less than $10,000), and small enough to locate on a typical property, away from the house, possibly underground. The discharge should be "drinkable" water, or nearly so.

This would be intended as an alternative to septic systems or holding tanks, for places where those solutions aren't feasible.

Does anyone out there know of something like this?
If not, whoever builds the first one - don't forget to include my name on the patent application :-)

Cost vs value

I think that the big problem is cost and size of the equipment needed. For example part of the water purification cycle is called aeration where the water is shot into the air like a fountain to mix in oxygen. Another problem is hat the solid waste would also be hard to transport without the water as a transportation medium.

I don't think the solid waste would be a big problem. Most septic systems can run for years without needing the solid waste pumped out.

What I think is needed is essentially a system to replace the drain field of a septic system. The septic tank and its associated bacterial cleaning system do a good job, but what's needed is a system to finish the job of purifying the output water.

Ok. In that case the big worry would be soluble chemicals. How do you get dissolved toilet bowl cleaner out of your water? I have no idea how industrial plants get all the chemicals out.
