Kryptos Sculpture

06/09/2005 12:30 PM

Located in the northwest corner of the courtyard at CIA headquarters in Langley, VA is a sculpture called "Kryptos" by artist James Sanborn. Dedicated on November 3, 1990, the theme of this sculpture is "intelligence gathering." Kryptos has four coded passages, but only three have been broken in the past 15 years. Apparently, many Kryptos aficionado groups have sprouted on the Internet, and the sculpture has seen decent airtime in Blogdom. Word is that Davinci Code author Dan Brown may use this sculpture as the central theme of an upcoming book.

Good Art

I think this is a great art. It not only conveys the proper image and history of the CIA, it is also interactive. I wish more people spent more time on their corporate art and have things the that truly reflect the people and culture of the workplace.
Now to see if I can break the code...

Thanks for posting this. I heard the tail end of a report about Kronos on NPR's "Morning Edition". Supposedly, one of the code breakers has turned over some (but not all) of his decryption methodology. Guess he figures it's best not to play all of his cards at one time.
