United Dumps Automated System

06/09/2005 11:00 AM

United Airlines will officially mothball its problem-plagued $700 million automated baggage system at Denver International Airport this fall and revert to transporting luggage the old-fashioned way: manually. The move will save up to $1 million a month in maintenance costs.

What doesn't work

Sometimes the hardest thing for a company to do is to admit something doesn't work and stop doing it. It only gets worse when you spend millions of dollars on a system and then have to scrap it. I the long term I think they will be better off getting rid of their $700 monster.

I remember reading about the installation of this thing a few years back and how it was a modern marvel that would revolutionize luggage transport. The best laid plans of mice and men always go awry.

The sad thing is that they probably had to scrap the $700 million system because they refused to spend another million in design and testing. People who short change test and development deserve what they get.
For some odd reason I can see the designer of the Death Star saying, "We don't need to run testing on the security of the vent shafts, what could happen?"
