Weight of a BBQ Pit

06/10/2009 6:41 PM

I have a BBQ pit made from a pressure vessel. It is a round pipe type vessel, looks like a large propane tank. It is 7 ft long, Messures 32 inches across center and is 3/8 thick metal. The fire box is 2 feet X 2 feet and is 1/4 inch thick steel plate welded on the end fo the vessel. I just need a rough idea on weight because I'm building a trailer for it and need to know roughly what size axle I will need to buy for it.

I'm no engineer by any means and wouldn't know were to start trying to figure this out.

I don't see how it could weigh over 300 lbs. Go visit the scrap yard, and find a rear axle from an older front wheel drive car. There is no axle that was used in a car that would be too light for your use. As a bonus, the relatively large wheels will help you to roll it over rough ground by hand. The axle will contain a cable operated parking/emergency brake system that would come in real handy when it is on a hill, with no car connected to it. And if you ever need any parts for the axle, every automotive parts store will be able to look up parts for it. And lastly, it will be dirt cheap. Good luck.

Hello bob c,

Hope you are fine?

The weight is around half a metric ton, and well over a 1000 Lbs.

So a substantial axle will be needed.

Good advice from you!

GA to you Sir!

The rear axle and leaf springs from a front wheel drive mini-van would also do the job and it wouldn't have that big bulge for the gears in the middle.

For what it's worth my Texas cousin had one made out of 36" oil well casing a little longer than yours. He had two axles under his, both 3500#, I'm sure.

But then, Texans always over do it anyway.

πxR2 will give you the circumference, which would be the same as a flat plate.

So multiply the numbers to get volume, add the #'s for the box and look it up in a materials handbook on the web.

Or,

Maybe one of the smart guys will do it for you.

Build it to last!

I have no idea of the configuration you intend, but strictly from the dimensions you have given I sketched up a quick 5 minute model, and got a weight (using plain carbon steel) of approx 806 lbs. I don't know of any axles that couldn't handle that, but that is only the steel weight, you will need to calculate in the weight of your fuel, and all those little pesky things that will add up quickly.

I also did not pay any attention to the orientation of the firebox as it relates to the vessel, Simply drew the parts and tossed them relatively close together to get a weight, volume, CG etc.

My Texas cousin put his on the "long", front side.

70 sf of 3/8" plate X 15.3# = 1071#

20 sf of 1/4" plate X 10.2# = 204#

Total weight = 1275#

Hello ronseto,

Hope you are OK?

Your calculation seems pretty good.

Mine is:

7' / 2100 x 32" / 800 x 9 mm tube = 802.5 Lbs / 364 Kg

32" / 800 x ⅜" / 9 mm circle end caps x2 = 154.5 Lbs / 70 Kg

2' / 600² x ¼" / 6 mm x4 (firebox) = 147.5 Lbs / 67 Kg

Total: 1104.5 Lbs / 501 Kgs............Approx.......

I did not allow for 'dished' end on the tube. And I allowed for four sides only on the firebox, as the bottom with be the tube and the top a gauze.

Take care...

Just skimming through the emails this morning and have not done the math as it appears to be nailed done for you. Here is a steel weight calculator link that I use. I hope you find it useful.

Hello Guest,

I do not know where you live, but as you have seen by my other posts you will need an SUV axle or one from an American car, which are mostly larger and more robust than some European models. I would design the whole thing to run forwards lengthways or it may be tight on some gates as it will be wider than the car?

Keep in touch please and perhaps send some photo's and join?

Take care and good luck.

If this is something you intend to take on the road I would buy a new axle. They are really pretty cheap when you consider they come with new bearings, seals, and hubs. If you decide to add brakes later then they will bolt right on to the pre-welded flanges on the axles.

On the other hand, if this is just to use around your own property or at a sporting event then most any used axle would do. And since it will not be traveling at road speeds the bearings could be in rough shape and still reused.

Here is a pic that was sent to me I thought you might enjoy.

Good luck on the project.

(16"x16"x3.14) x 7 x.375 x 40#/SQ FT

(1.3' X 1.3' X 3.14) x 7' x .375 x 40#/SQ FT

5.31' x 7' x.375 x 40#/SQ FT = 558# for the round pipe vessel. I broke into a few steps so you can see the conversion to decimal feet and the area formula for a cylindar.

Box 12' x 2' x .25 x 40#/SQ FT = 240# Total combined weight around 800#

Like other posts round to 1/2 ton for extra componets etc
