Measurement and Control Software Tools

06/15/2009 9:19 AM

Other than National Instruments LabView, is there any other good software source of quick analog measurement and analog control tool software for reading analog or setting voltage outputs and controlling process?

Also if there is small hub to field interface the application hardware on USB for Laptop then it will be ideal for small applications.

Cheaper hardware and software tools may be something of great help in education and learning. Professional reliable tools for industrial control may be ideal. I am worried about Windows Software as base software as it mat crash any time.

How to have a reliable hardware and software for say medical use for monitoring and control where failure can be a serious problem. I am also noticing that Interest in reliable hardware and software is decreasing and interest in cheap use and through things is increasing. Perhaps cost may be a major problem. Perhaps no one wants to spend time waiting to make a reliable thing any more. I wonder if I can get a reliable IC for my next hardware. This may be a universal problem now.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has developed what they call the mobile studio program

http://mobilestudio.rpi.edu/

It's a board and software combo. They've had several different versions of thehardware, the current board specs are:

  • Blackfin Core
  • 2-channel, 2MSPS per channel, 12-bit ADC
  • 2 14-bit, 2MSPS per channel DACs (Function Generation/Arbitrary Wave Generation)
  • USB 2.0 High-Speed (480Mbps)
  • 16-channels of digital (3.3V) I/O
  • 2 dedicated Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) channels
  • Expanded input voltage range
  • 250kSPS Impedance Analyzer
  • 2.5GHz, 1Mbps Wireless Transceiver

Whats also cool is that you can integrate the hardware into your own programs using the supplied COM interface

Hello Shyam,

We have recently been using Beckhoff equipment on a project where we had considered National Instruments and standard PLC equipment. We chose Beckhoff for a number of reasons in order to save money. It has been a very good decision.

Their website is simply www.beckhoff.com and they offer a wide range of products. I must say that I really like the ease of assembly and connection as well. Our task requires updating about 2000 inputs and outputs in under 250 microseconds. No problem with this hardware. I think they will re-define process control as we know it.

Regards,

These equipments are like integrated PLCs for industrial use and at less accuracy.

They have listed 16-bit ADC with only 0.3% accuracy which is like <9-bit accurate.

I have also looked at National Instruments 18-bit ADC which is claimed to be word's highest accuracy is only 0.01% or 1 in 10000 or about 13-bit accurate. I believe this is also statistical claim over 100 reading average.

Who else builds better systems in the world? Does any one ever claims to have error below 0.001% and has an accurate measurement system for 10V signal? This is just 10ppm measurement. People claim to have measured 0.1ppm absolute values of voltages. How accurate are they?
