NDTs for Inspecting Tank Bottoms

12/02/2006 9:39 AM

I want to know how the method ACOUSTIC EMISSION works to detect the corrosion, leaks in the bottom of large internal floating roof tank. Are there any other methods by which i can know the condition of the tank bottom without affecting normal operations in internal floating tank ?

An internal-floating-roof tank is a storage tank with a floating roof. If a tank didn't have a floating roof, the pocket of air in the tank will pressurize as you fill the tank and possibly result in:

a.) a ruptured tank, or

b.) problems in pumping the liquid in since the pressure keeps increasing as the level gets higher.

NDT is Non-Destructive Testing. Acoustic Emissions testing is a method of checking for defects in the material (in this case, the tank wall). I don't know much about it but I think it involves vibrations between 20kHz and above. The vibrations are analyzed and gives you a way of finding cracks, thin walls, weak welds, etc.

Dear Sir,

I note sure what process you need to do. But, many procudure using NDTs after product inside take out from the tank. You can using Ultrasonic tighness test to make sure bottom area shut be tested or see corrosion area.

Many fabricator company or blasting & painting company understand about this.

Pls find out at you local company activity doing that.

Jaythanki - a two second Google search ("aoustic emission") would have answered your question. Try http://www.ndt.net/article/az/ae_idx.htm . Ensure that you are clear in your goals - are you looking for corrosion or are you looking for leaks.
