1974 Rambler - Painted Chrome

06/18/2009 8:20 AM

G'Day all. I have a 1974 Rambler that has hubcaps with painted in spokes. Or, more accurately, the gaps between the 'spokes' are painted black. With the passage of time the paint is coming off. I wish to repaint them. This then raised the question in my mind of just how do the manufacturers mass produce painted hubcaps? The paint has to be accurately applied into indentations in the pressing around logos and into rings and as mentioned the 'gaps' between the spokes. I have seen crockery painted using silk screens but i doubt that would work here due to the relief.

Also the paint has to stick. On this note i would also like to know what sort of paint and/or primer they used. The steering wheel also has been painted black over smooth cream plastic. The same questions apply. How? What did they use?

Thanking you in advance for your replies

blocks of color are usually masked.

carefully applied masking tape works, trim w/exacto knife.

an automobile paint store can supply the proper paint and prep materials/instructions.

Same for the steering wheel.

Go to NAPA or an automotive paint store and ask for some "self etching primer". Prepare the surface as you would normally do. Then use the self etching primer before you paint the surface. This is the best primer for painting over aluminum, chrome, galvinized, zinc or other coatings.
