Driving Gloves, Anyone?

06/18/2009 8:57 AM

During our usual lunch time ramblings today, someone spotted an add in the paper for a pair of sheep skin driving gloves, £177 a pair. This raised the question, why would you be wearing driving gloves in this day and age? I myself have been known to done a pair of Nomex race gloves, but that's slightly different. And before anyone says it's for convertible drivers, I mostly see drivers of tin top wearing them. So why, unless you have a classic MG or such like, (that's Morris Garages, by the way) would you wear driving gloves? I really wanna know!

Possibles that come to mind:

In Phoenix summer the under-windscreen temp runs in excess of 140F and the steering wheel does too.

In Colorado winter the steering wheel for the first 20 minutes driving is uncomfortably cold.

In my old Dodge truck, the imitation leather cover is disintigrating in this black crumbly mess that is very hard to get off your hands when taking the wife on a date

But I generally under all these condition wear a pair of leather work gloves at $6.00.

But if I had an MG, Austin-Healy, et. al I would not only wear gay little shoes and open-back driving gloves - but by golly a newsboys cap and a trailing white scarf!

A photo of that would be priceless! In fact, I'm sitting here giggling about that scene right now. All of the above with a cowboy hat.

The girls of Exeter would be all over that like the cheapest of suites.

Really, you buy $250 gloves because you can.

Hey now - I'm a multi-dimensional kinda guy

I don't have an appropriate dimension for silly expensive accessories

Had a pilot in the Navy that seriously thought about turning around and flying back because he left his Serengeti sunglasses behind

Once the flight engineer told him how much fuel we would have to dump to get light enough to land, followed by refueling he reluctantly shut up.

You forgot the Tweed Sprots Jacket with the leather patched elbows and the Sherlock Holmes pipe.

Speaking with a lisp might help also.

Ahh anon comments about lisps - shame

But I actually liked the long-stem clay pipes

But given the US drive to non-smoking it probably doesn't matter

I'll be sticking with an old Power Wagon with a gunrack, and boots and jeans

Nice looking truck. That series was very popular with fire departments years back. Probably the best of the 4x4 trucks of that era. I think every one of those trucks that I ever saw in the fire service had taken the "Power Wagon" emblem, and rearranged the letters to read Fire Wagon. They were not fast, but they would go where you wanted.

Top end (depending on specifics) right around 45 - 55 and loud if you don't change tire types

Fire Departments (brush division), Forest Service, remote utility companies....

Not fast, not a lot in creature comfort, just a good honest truck

That one is a 1963, that a google search turned up.

http://www.dodgepowerwagon.com/classifieds/dunaway-061209-63.php

When I retire, I'm going to buy one. However, since they took away over half my 401K, and reduced my property values to squat, that prospect looks far away.

Ah, fear not. I've lost my retirement fund several times! House is worth squat and I'm not only still paying, I'm moving yet another state away!

Lalalalalala!

There was the run on the Yen, then the crazed insane fiancee, any number of other bad choices

Like letting the bankers off after the S&L debacle, letting them live after Enron, and we'll prolly let 'em live again.

So years ago I settled on the idea of semi-retirement scrounging cans along the roadside when the youngsters won't tolerate me in the workplace anymore

Stinky Pete has offered me a concession for the opposite side of his roads - you should join us - you can have medians!

Or y'know - we'll go save the third world.

Hah!

Taken in exactly the spirit intended

Early novel I read in school - Henderson the Rain King is a 1959 novel by Saul Bellow.

SERIOUSLY cured me.

Later hanging around missionaries back from their travels, I was glad I read the book

Don't mean to bag on all, of course. no offense intended, sure some good works are done, etc

WOW thats a beauty.

I recently placed a bid on one that was up for auction that my friend told me about that was being removed from his fire dept. truck pool. They had just last year rebuilt the engine and transmission. Then got an inflow of $$ to upgrade their equipment so they decided to sell it. They give preference to other fire depts. but i figured I'd put in my bid and hope for the best.

Scotch Eggs are fine - slathered in Salad Cream, though mayo will do at a pinch. I will not discuss Iron Bru !yuuuuuuuuuuck. Driving gloves might come in handy if you accidentally drank some.

My first car was a 1960 Sunbeam Alpine. Couldn't afford a Tiger when they came along later, but traded the Alpine in on a brand-new TR-4 in '64. Truly fun car - but things have changed: my current Jetta with stick & 1.8T will beat it in every reasonable test except for turning circle and time to remove the hood and fold away the hood sticks... [= take the cloth top off and put it into the boot (trunk), fold the support mechanism down under its cover, and snap the Lift-The-Dots onto their posts]. A friend and I could take the top down during a red light - and did so every chance we got.

Seriously tried to figure out how to get a family of four into the TR-6 when it came out, but settled on the minivan instead.

Early on I had a Hillman Husky that was a station wagon that had the same series motor as the Alpine. I had dreams of a Hillman Husky with a 289 or 302 Ford in it. A friend had done a 302 Sprite. Fun in the sun.

And you would have a garage full of Lucas parts.

Or a car full of Delco parts

Not great for it's historical authenticity, but way better for reliability

'Course not sure those old shoes still fit Lucas, they are the electrical system for Gulfstream aircraft now

Re: Gloves

Leather gloves that double as work gloves whether in or out of a vehicle is cool.

You can wear gloves (any gloves) while driving a truck.

Scarfs... well... as long as they are earth tones and don't clash other accessories, gof or it.

I grew up with the Phoenix (Mesa) interior car warmth... refreshing and relaxing, but bad on bare fllesh covering the hands. Also, I learned then and there, that real men do not wear shorts, esp when sliding into a car in July at Alma School and Southern... But that's for another question by someone else who needs to meet the macho-hetero male dress code standards.

Yeah, pretty hard to describe bare thighs and triple digit vinyl!

Although the contortions necessary to get back off the seat are probably good exercise!

Perhaps this is the wrong forum for such a question? Engineers tend not to be victims of fashion which deems something to be "so last year" before you have got your use out of it, but some people have so much money to spend they would consider such fripperies cheap. Vanity probably. I will never understand why people do half the things they do.

Probably not, but then again.....

I am expecting answers relating to steering wheel design, ergonomics, types of surfaces/coatings, anti vibration design...

I was looking over some pictures on a project with some engineers I had did some 10 years prior......, I noticed and pointed out I was wearing the same shirt. Took a while for the laughter stop.

Re: Gloves

Hey at least you could fit in the same shirt after 10 years. How many of the others could say that.

I went to my 25th year high school Reunion BBQ and wore the t-shirt that had all our names printed on it that we had made for our class in 1982. We had a small graduating class. Some thought I had it remade but most remembered me as a skinny dude even back then.

As far as wearing driving gloves. I wear a pair of rubber coated gardening gloves to help keep my hands from sliding on the steering wheel. $6.95 a pair at the hardware store. I tend to lose them on a regular basis. So theres no way I'm going to pay much for a pair of gloves.

Re: Driving Gloves, Anyone?

06/18/2009 5:40 PM

PbMak,

This raised the question, why would you be wearing driving gloves in this day and age?

I don't think I would ever go with driving gloves.....(never say never).

But when I drive my first 911 (which I still have. after awhile I did install a steering wheel glove/cover/condom on it (on the steering wheel) ......The sweat from my hands does deteriorate the leather. the glove also keeps it in like new condition.....like the rest of the car.

I didn't care for the cleaning or conditioning solution for the leather on my steering wheel because it makes it slippery, plus made my hands sweat even more...........Slowing down.......well I at least like to stay with the traffic.

As far as who would were a driving glove.....well when I got pulled over in the village of Allouez, a suburb of Green Bay, Wisconsin......I watched in my rear view mirror of the pimply face, reflective sunglassed wearing cop get out of his car, and I noticed him clinching and releasing his driving leather gloved hands as he approached the car........and hearing him ask in a breaking adolescent sqeaky voice say..."Sir, do know the reason why I stopped you?.....

So yes, there are people who would buy such a item.

Re: Driving Gloves, Anyone?

Last week I drove in a caravan across the great state of Texas, 11.5 hours of driving there on Sunday and 11.5 hours of driving back on Friday, plus stops. The vehicles of choice were a '98 Ram 3500 van and an '01 F-350 van. After fighting a cross wind for the first three hours I donned a pair of deer skin work gloves because my hands we getting raw. The gloves really made a huge difference in reducing fatigue, I found myself gripping the wheel and more relaxed in the shoulders and back.

I only wear driving gloves in the winter here so that my fingers don't freeze and snap-off in -40C sunshine.

Not sure what the official answer should be, but based on experience...

If you've ever steered a leather wheel, you'd know how slippery that skin-to-leather grip can be; but leather glove on hand seems to afford a driver an excellent, non-slip purchase on a leather steering wheel, regardless of ambient (temp/humidity) or physiological (hand skin temp and perspiration) conditions.
