Various depending on type of gas :

Easy - soap water test.

Siniffing Dogs - No joke!

Flame ionization detector

Soil monitoring method

Flow monotiring devices to measure rate of changes of pressure and/or the mass flow rates at different section of the pipeline.

Active Optical method; Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy(TDLAS).

Passive Optical method: Thernal imaging and multi-wavw imaging.

Finally - Get an expert fropm your Gas Company.

Sniffing dogs are certainly no joke, It's our speciality. How much line are we talking and of what size? There are numerous ways to find a leak currently being used by gas companies.

Hi,

To DETECT not to ANALYSE i would use gas detector with simple sensor (wheatstone bridge) vide catalityc for combustible gases.

Calibrate it for CH4 which is if i remember correctly 90-95 % vol of natural gas.

The sensors are quite cheap just use google with fraze " CH4 detection".

BR,

SAM

Expensive, but a very good tool (usual disclaimer).
