Mazda Protege 2003 - Squeaky Steering Wheel

I had few months of experience in steering company and I assume that you are using hydraulic steering systems in mazda. In hydraulic steering there are many seals are used. I presume that you had that sound during left and right turn and mostly this sound comes in the piston seal which is moving inside the hydraulic cylinder. the main cause of the sound is due to the metal contamination present inside the hydraulic cylinder.

Do you have the warranty for the steering system? it is better to go for that because steering system is bit complicated with lot of tiny parts? do not dismantle it and make the manual work in your steering system. It is safety components and needs lot of setting even after you change the seal which cant be done even by service professional in your local place. better choose to bye the new steering system and fix it in mazda...eventhough it is costly it is best solution I could advise.

otherwise just give a try to change the lubricant of your steering system. it may remove your metal contamination which inside the cylinder..cheers

Though a consideration your point is not very sharp and the least or shall I say waay out in left field. What your are describing is termed cavitation but not due to metal contamination...

Hello please describe the motion which causes the squeal.

Is it when turning the wheel and holding it at full turn, against the stop?

just by turning it

Does it squeak only when the motor is running?

Does the temperature make a difference?

You'll need a repair manual for your vehicle, all your answers are in it, all the necessary tools and the exact method of disassembly an will have exhausting explanation also.

Well I've notice that, when the temperature drops at 59 degrees I don't hear it anymore but if it get's above 68 it starts. I dont think the temperature of the motor has to anything with it.

If what you say is true, there is a possibility that it is only the plastic covers around the steering wheel that are causing the squeak. It has happened to me in this way. I took them off for a few days and the problem was solved at all temperatures. carefull examination showed a small area of contact, a light filing and the problem was fixed.

Or you may be lucky even after inserting all screws, but not tightening, move parts away from each other as you tighten up.....

I was plagued with an annoying squeak from my wife's steering wheel. I was convinced it was the horn contact. I was wrong. It was a rubber sleeve that seals the steering column to the firewall. Try spraying anything that moves against a non-moving part with WD40, or other light oil. Once the noisy area has been found, work with dry lubes. Moly spray stinks, but works well as do teflon, graphite and dry silicone. Good luck.
