Laser Measurement Devices

06/23/2009 10:19 AM

For security reasons we need to measure every empty van that comes to the plant, they can be 53´ or 48´. The purpose is to verify that the inside length is the same as the outside length (to check for false walls). This has to be done fast and without having to go inside the trailer. Currently we have to get inside the trailer and use a 53´(or 48´) rope. Do you know of a reliable laser device that can do the job?

Thanks!

I have one of the Bosch laser distance measuring devices and use it fairly often; it would easily do what you want and quickly. Realize, though, that Bosch really screwed up and only offered three measurement units: m, decimal feet, and feet, inches and fractions. You can get the thing for around $135 on Amazon.

Hello someonesdad,

You say they screwed up an only measure in M, Decimal feet, and feet inches and fractions?

Does it actually matter to you what the measure use is? I would advise to measure in mm this will give you the size to the nearest 25th inch. Or measure and use a converter on-line to change from your measure to US or any other unit you want?

As long as you stick with feet and inches, OR, decimal, and do not try to convert between the two as you measure you will not get any errors. I can convert in my head between the two but I can see where it may be hard to convert to mm or 'English' Decimal units, if you are not conversant with them.

BTW, what do you mean by "Decimal feet"? A Decimal foot to me is 300 mm, or 30 cm.

I see a station which the trailer is pulled through which from overhead laser measure the front of the trailer , at that time several laser shoot the inside (door is already open) the two measurements via computer cross talk and the net wall is displayed. plus all trailers have numbers that is say bar coded and the history is log in as well , any changes , a red light flashes.... simple and auto and accurate.

whats for lunch??

When I was a Realtor I used an unltrasonic device to measure rooms. It was hand held, battery powered, and worked very fast and accurately enough for your purposes. Among other places you can get one at Sears, Home Depot, or several other places that should do the trick for you.

The Stanley TLM100 Tru-Laser is accurate to +/- 1/4" (6mm) at 100 ft. Operation is essentially point-click-read. Cost is ~US$100 at amazon.com.
