Reusing Ammonium Nitrate in Nitric Acid Absorption Columns

06/24/2009 10:55 AM

What is the maximum concentration of ammonium nitrate allowable in the Process condensate after neutralising free ammonia before adding into nitric acid absorption columns? Are there any hazards associated with a higher Ammonium Nitrate load in the stream?

There is no reaction between ammonium nitrate and nitric acid.

Thank you very much for the response but I wanted to find out if a higher load of Ammonium Nitrate has any effect on absorption of the Nox gases in the Absorber.A certain article also mentioned that Ammonium Nitrite poses a hazard in the Absorption Column. What is the nature of the hazard?

Nitrites are reducing agents. They are "looking" for oxygen to react with and form nitrates. Sodium nitrite, for example, is used as an oxygen scavenger in boiler water treatment. Does that help?

It helps but which hazards are associated with that reducing effect
