Dear Sir,
I am working in Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. as a Mechanical Engineer.
I want to carry out time study for diffrent machines like Lathe, Milling, Drill machine, Jig Boring, Shapping, Grinding etc.
How do I start that procedure ?
There are several types of "time study" one may perform. For example if you are studying machine utilisation and personal allowances etc then this is a different procedure to establishing time standards for specific operations which is a skilled function which may be simplified in several ways. In modern times much of the latter type is achieved using systems such as mtmII or modapts.
Let me know which you mean and I'll try to help.
PS ; the "start" of the procedure should always be to inform hte operators concerned as to what ayou are doing and why ... is your workpplace unionised? This is one of the main reasons PDMTS (mtmII etc) are popular - take a quick video "for training purposes" and walk away.
If you or your superior is considering "time study" in a productive shop or manufacturing floor environment, the best advise is to bring in a well-qualified outside consultant. This kind of activity in an enterprise can be fraught with problems--as suggested by the above mention of unions, and otherwise--and risk. And, it is not the kind of activity that a mere mechanical engineer would typically be qualified to undertake, at least not without an extensive and lengthy period of training--including (university level) training in employee management and employee relations. Reference to a web site for that kind of training just will not cut it. Since you have been placed in an awkward position by your boss, your first step (and one which could ultimately come to be appreciated...to your credit) might be to get him or her some information that will assure him/her as to the wisdom of reconsidering his/her objectives and task delegations. This should be the start of your procedure! So that (s)he takes the heat for any problems that arise...not you yourself. Get it? Hope so.
There is truth in the above... however it depends to a large extent on what you (or your boss) are trying to achieve. Fill us in if you are still interested.
PS: I have 25 years of experience in setting time standards in a reward for performance environment so I am "qualified" in the field.
