Most of the time, a person will choose an area of interest upon which to concentrate. Electrical engineering covers a huge area and it is impossible to be really good in all areas. Some people specialize in power, while others specialize in communications. It seems that a lot of things are going digital so that is a fundamental area of concern, but it has levels from designer to user from which to choose. Electronics used in the medical fields and bioengineering are special but you must understand the basics first. Automation requires a knowledge of control theory but it also requires a good working knowledge of physics.

Try to meet with people that work in the areas that seem promising to you. Find out what it is like to work in those places and decide if that is what you want to do. It is likely that you will work in many places throughout your life. So if you become too much of a specialist, it could be difficult to find work from time to time.

I support what NotUrOrdinaryJoe said plus I'd like to add that where you get your degree is important.

For example, an Electrical Engineering degree gained in Thailand is not worth 5 grains of salt (a pinch of poo) in Australia...unless the degree holder is willing to spend extra time & money going to an Australian university to prove that they know what they are talking about. Why? Cheating is almost compulsory in Thailand (tongue in cheek). In 3rd world countries, degrees are bought almost as easy as prostitutues are hired. I do not joke about this!!!

I would suggest any ABET accredited engineering school in the USA (of course, if they're world famous, that's better for you).
