1990 Volkswagen Golf - Radiator Fan

07/06/2009 4:37 AM

How do i know what is causing the fuse of my radiator fan circuit of 1990 volkswagen Gulf 2 to get hot and melt or open the circuit thereby making the fan not to work? many a times the fan makes a woobling nice and some time it doesnt, some time it will make the noise and stop after awhile,i have replaced the fuse severally and have been wondering whats causing the fuse to open.

Ruptured fuses indicate a fault. Repeated rupture of the same fuse indicates a lack of attention on finding and eliminating the fault.

  • Check the wiring with the fan disconnected from it so as to make sure the circuit downstream of the fuse is not shorting to chassis somewhere, and if it is, then correct it.
  • Check the fan motor terminals, during spinning the rotor by hand. Is resistance to chassis satisfactory? Is resistance across the terminals satisfactory? If not, replace it.

If I understand what you said correctly, you need a new fan. The one you have is almost 20 years old. I'm guessing that "makes a woobling nice" means that it makes lots of noise? Things do wear out, you know. Even I could replace a radiator fan. Go buy one and put it in.

Yeah, the wobbling is probably due to bearings wearing down/out. Then when your fan gets in a bind it is drawing too much current and blowing your fuse. Replacing your fan should do the trick.
