Rubber to Rubber Bonding

07/07/2009 11:32 AM

I am looking for a method for bonding/laminating a choice of Buna N durometer A60,SBR Durometer A75 or Neoprene Durometer A70 to a Nitrile (NBR) substrate.

The bond must withstand continuous submersion in water at a pressure of 90 psi, within a temperature range of 32 to 104 degrees F.

I would prefer a one part CA compound due to the quick-setting properties, but have been advised that they are not water resistant.

Two part urethane based compounds have the drawback of long cure times but seem to have excellent adhesion and sheer strength.

I have investigated the possible use of a "Nano Glue" after observing the text "100% water proof" on the label, the fine print reads "Not for continuous submersion/below waterline".

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have used the 3M super adhesive 'Automix' with excellent results on all types of common rubber with great results. Its made of the stuff that puts the super in super glue! Its basically the industrial strength version of super glue.

Every type of rubber to rubber or rubber to metal bond I have made and tested it on had the rubber rip apart someplace else other than where the glue was at. I have also used it on applications with constant water exposure with no problems as well. (Scuba gear)

Might I recommend LOCTITE? www.loctite.com Yeah I know... we usually think of them when we are screwing things up, but they make more varieties of adhesives than you can imagine. I bet they might have an answer on their web site... just ask.
